The Vineyards

The estate is comprised of sloping vineyards at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level and span an area of 80 acres of which half under vine.

Meticulous attention has been paid to the positioning of the vines so that optimum benefit can be derived from the terroir.

Co-mingled over our rolling estate with the revered Sangiovese grape are other varieties made up Merlot, Canaiolo, Chardonnay, and Trebbiano also nourished by the rich soil famous for its composition.

From the kind and beneficial seasons these are the crops that make up the full line of Terre di Argillaia wines.

The vineyards are of varying ages averaging 15 years. 60% of the newer vineyards average 7 years of age. The density of our vineyards are approximately 5,000 plants per hectare. Harvest 70 Q of grape per hectare.

The training systems employed by Terre di Argillaia are Spurred Cordon and Guyot in the younger vineyards, and Capovolto in the older.

The timing of the harvest is the September thru October.

A curiosity. The name Terre di Argillaia is derived from the deposit of clay that once stood in front of the estate. It was this clay that fed an ancient furnace for the production of pottery for which Tuscany is famousin Chianti. Argillaia is pronounced (ar_JIL_leye_ya.)
